LYRICS MEANING

॥ Doha ॥

"Shri Guru Charan Saroj Raj..."
The poet Tulsidas begins by humbly bowing to the feet of his Guru (spiritual teacher), acknowledging that the blessings of the Guru are like sacred dust which can cleanse the mirror of his mind. With a purified mind, he now proceeds to describe the pure glory of Lord Hanuman, whose grace yields the four fruits of life—Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).

"Budhi Hin Tanu Janike..."

The poet admits his limited intellect and physical weakness and turns to Hanuman, the son of the Wind God, for help. He prays to be blessed with strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and asks that all his mental afflictions and sorrows be removed. This sets a tone of surrender and reverence.

Chaupai (Verses in Quartet Form)

"Jai Hanuman Gyan Gun Sagar..."
Hanuman is praised as an ocean of wisdom and virtue, a beacon of light across the three worlds. He is not just a brave warrior but a divine messenger of Lord Rama, full of boundless strength, born of Anjani and the Wind God.

"Mahavir Vikram Bajrangi..."
He is described as immensely courageous and strong like a thunderbolt, the one who dispels evil thoughts and brings good company. His golden-colored body shines with divine beauty, and he is always adorned with earrings and curly hair.

"Hath Vajra Aur Dhuvaje Viraje..."
Armed with a mace (Vajra) and flag, Hanuman looks ready for battle and is ever-prepared to serve. The sacred thread across his shoulder symbolizes his commitment to dharma. He is born of Kesari and is a form of Lord Shiva, widely revered for his radiance and valor.

"Vidyavan Guni Ati Chatur..."
Hanuman is wise, virtuous, and incredibly clever. He is always eager to carry out the work of Lord Rama. He loves listening to stories of Rama and keeps Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita forever enshrined in his heart.

"Sukshma roop dhari Siyahi dikhava..."
Hanuman’s ability to change form at will is emphasized—he took a tiny form to meet Sita and a fearsome one to burn Lanka. He becomes mighty and destructive when fighting demons, always ensuring the success of Lord Rama’s mission.

"Laye Sanjivan Lakhan Jiyaye..."
He saved Lakshmana by bringing the Sanjeevani herb and was embraced with joy by Lord Rama. Rama praised him highly, considering him as dear as his brother Bharat.

"Sahas badan tumharo yash gaave..."
Hanuman’s fame is sung by countless mouths. Lord Vishnu himself embraces Hanuman lovingly, and great sages, gods, and learned beings all speak of his greatness.

"Tum upkar Sugreevahin keenha..."
Hanuman helped Sugreev meet Rama, which led to Sugreev regaining his kingdom. He also gave wise counsel to Vibhishana, who became king of Lanka through Hanuman’s guidance.

"Yug sahastra jojan par Bhanu..."
Hanuman’s childhood feat—mistaking the sun for a fruit and leaping to eat it—demonstrates his immense power and playfulness. Carrying Lord Rama’s ring in his mouth, he crossed the ocean, a task that amazed the world.

"Durgaam kaj jagat ke jete..."
He makes even the most difficult tasks easy for devotees. As the guardian at Lord Rama’s door, no one can enter without his permission. Taking shelter in Hanuman removes all fear, and evil spirits stay away upon hearing his name.

"Nase rog harai sab peera..."
Chanting Hanuman’s name consistently heals diseases and relieves pain. He frees devotees from hardships—physical, mental, or spiritual—if they focus on him with sincerity in thought, word, and deed.

"Sub par Ram tapasvee raja..."
Rama is the king of all sages and Hanuman serves all who serve Rama. Those who express their heartfelt desires to Hanuman are blessed with incredible, fulfilling results.

"Charon Yug partap tumhara..."
Hanuman’s glory shines in all four Yugas (ages), and he is known throughout the world. He is the protector of saints and sages and the destroyer of demons—forever loved by Lord Rama.

"Ashta sidhi nav nidhi ke dhata..."
Granted by Sita, Hanuman holds the power to bestow the eight siddhis (spiritual powers) and nine types of wealth. He carries the divine essence of Rama and is always seen as his humble servant.

"Tumhare bhajan Ram ko pavai..."
Chanting Hanuman’s name leads one to Lord Rama and washes away miseries of past lives. At the time of death, the soul that remembers Hanuman will reach Rama’s abode and be reborn as a devotee.

"Aur Devta Chit na dharehi..."
There is no need to seek other deities—devotion to Hanuman brings all happiness. He removes all sorrow and trouble for those who worship him with love and faith.

"Jai Jai Jai Hanuman Gosahin..."
The poet repeatedly hails Hanuman with reverence and pleads for grace, just as a disciple seeks blessings from a revered teacher.

"Jo sat bar path kare kohi..."
Reading the Hanuman Chalisa a hundred times releases one from bondage and brings immense joy. Anyone who recites it with devotion is granted success—with Lord Shiva himself as witness.

"Tulsidas sada hari chera..."
Tulsidas ends the hymn by proclaiming his eternal servitude to Lord Hari (Rama) and praying that Hanuman takes permanent residence in his heart.

॥ Final Doha ॥

"Pavantnai sankar haran..."
Hanuman, the son of the Wind God, is the destroyer of evil and a symbol of auspiciousness. The poet prays that Hanuman resides in his heart along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita—forever.
